“Obsession” takes love to a whole new level

A couple holding hands

*Spoilers below. Read at your own risk.*

It seems like most of the time these days, watching a horror movie in a theater is best seen without watching a trailer and going in blind. This is one of those movies.

I couldn’t hear the end of it. All of my friends kept telling me to watch “Obsession” for myself and with no context – I said let’s go and check it out.

From the start of the movie, I was intrigued by the story and the characters – was this going to be some kind of sick love story? Were the characters going to find their happy ending? And I was not expected to experience what I did.

Bear tugged at my heartstrings and I just wanted him to find true love! He had this love for Nikki that I was rooting for in the beginning and he seemed like such a genuine guy. During the movie, we really didn’t get to know Nikki’s true character. But I think that was on purpose. I wanted them to fall in love and have a happy ending.

Until he made a wish on a One Wish Willow practically in tears. “I wish Nikki loved me more than anyone in the fucking world.”

After he made that wish, her personality twisted and she was instantly infatuated with Bear. Was it the wish? It had to be….right? I was rooting for them but instantly caught the ick when he was taking advantage of her. It seemed too easy. All of a sudden he gets his happy ending? Just by making a simple wish? That’s wasn’t the case at all.

Then — she went batshit crazy.

Every twist and turn in this movie kept me on the edge of my seat. There were parts where I felt like covering my eyes and peeking through my fingers at the screen. The acting was phenomenal and Inde Navarrette who played Nikki has a huge acting career ahead of her. How her personality shifted from second to second was super impressive. I got so engulfed by the story, I literally thought what I was watching was real.

Her acting, the story, the set design of the house and the general ambience of the storytelling made my stomach churn in parts of the movie. It felt too real (in a good way of course).

The funny part is, I know my boyfriend is obsessed with me. I questioned him after I watched this movie. (For context – he knows nothing about this film). Of course, I had to ask him a series of questions.

“Would you stand in the corner of the bedroom and watch me sleep at night? Would you jump up every time I moved an inch or left the room? You aren’t a murderer are you?”

Of course he wouldn’t do any of these things, but this movie made me incredibly jumpy afterwards. My paranoia was through the roof!

And in all honesty – the cat – oh the cat…. All those scenes really got to me.

This movie made me realize, horror is shifting its tone and is becoming this whole new animal taking on new angles of storytelling and I am literally OBSESSED with it. (Excuse the pun). I recommend this movie to all horror lovers and people who love thriller movies as well. I promise you, you will not regret giving this a watch. This film truly takes the word obsession to a whole new level.
