Here we are in the new year 2023 – it’s a new year of growth and a new year of horror films. And so far, it’s off to a great start.
“M3GAN” was a pleasant shock for me this year. When I went into the theatre I had only saw glimpses of small bits through the trailer and I kept wondering to myself is this the new and improved Chucky? I think from a modern perspective it is.
“M3GAN” centers around this little girl, Cady, who lost her parents in a car accident. She now is being taken in by her aunt who doesn’t know how to take care of a child. The aunt is pretty self- consumed with her own life and work – that she doesn’t bother to really take care of this little girl emotionally and even physically at times. So instead, her aunt, who is a toy creator creates MEGAN an AI operated doll who connects with Cady to help her. But she helps her with her every need – even emotionally.
This concept is scary to me because I feel like this could happen in real life. As humans we are so enveloped with technology. Where even at times we choose technology over a human connection. I mean have you seen those couples out at restaurants who are on their cell phones instead of talking?
Being on that technology is an addiction where we constantly need to be on our phones looking at a screen. With where AI is currently I think it is totally possible for a M3GAN to appear and cause havoc.
As far as the character goes, M3GAN is very witty, creepy and even hilarious. With that being said, I do like gore. This film was way too PG-13 for my liking. Every time M3GAN went in for the kill, the camera veered away from the scene. I didn’t enjoy that aspect, sure it make it more dramatic, but this is a horror film! And a horror film means blood and guts – I wasn’t getting that. I think that essential element kind of brought down the film for me.
So comparing it to Chucky, the carnage isn’t there. And that’s one of the reasons I love Chucky so much! But here’s the thing, is M3GAN better than the Chucky remake? Absolutely.
I think it’s just because it’s a fresh start on a horror doll character. Chucky is great don’t get me wrong – but it can get kind of stale. And M3GAN brought a fresh new face to 2023.
And lemme tell you – it’s a great one.
Plus she sings, and that’s pretty great.
So if you like a great combination of campiness and creepiness, go into the theatre and watch “M3GAN.”
