Here we are – still making my way through the “Hellraiser” franchise with Pinhead. If this film is a sign – the franchise only goes downhill from here on out.
Why? Because this film is a literal pile of flaming garbage. Let me tell you why.
From the very start the protagonist, detective Joseph, isn’t a likeable character. I frankly didn’t care about his demise at the end because throughout the entire movie he is rude to everyone he meets. He is cheating on his wife, is rarely home for his daughter, tries to pin a murder on his partner, and he just isn’t nice to ANYONE in this film. The base of a good horror movie is to at least have a strong main character who you root for to live – and he just didn’t do that for me.
The plot was also extremely confusing, and it didn’t feel like a true “Hellraiser” film. This movie revolves around a detective who enjoys puzzles, finds a crime scene with the box, and slowly loses his mind while trying to solve the case.
This isn’t a thriller movie. This isn’t a crime movie. This is a Pinhead movie – or it’s supposed to be anyway? Sure it had the box in it for a short time, a few Cenobites here and there – but it barely even had Pinhead in it. It’s like they took a generic script, slapped Pinhead on a few pages and called it a Hellraiser film. And Pinhead with his Cenobites is the only reason for watching these films. That’s what makes it unique and exciting. Without these elements it’s just a generic scary movie.
Even at the end of the film I was still left confused on what even happened in the movie.
The other thing about the “Hellraiser” films that I think make them charming is the gruesome gore and the feeling of unsettledness throughout the movie. I didn’t feel that way – if anything I was bored. I got about half way through the movie and seriously considered turning it off and not even finishing it.
As far as it being made in 2000 – the graphics weren’t anything to be amazed about. The color shifts in scenes actually made me feel ill at times and didn’t add anything to the story of the film.
And not only was the character development bad, the acting was poor as well. Frankly there was nothing memorable about this film.
I feel like “Hellraiser: Inferno” was just another way for the franchise to make a buck, but they didn’t put enough love into it to actually make it a solid movie.
It was just a waste of time and it’s a flaming pile of garbage that I will never watch again.
So if you are watching the “Hellraiser” movies like I am – skip this – seriously, save yourself the exhaustion of watching a bad movie.
