“Barbarian.” What is this film about you ask? I wasn’t actually completely sure when I watched this film – but I think that’s what gives it its charm. Ever since this film was released I have been wanting to see it. I’ve heard so many mixed reviews – but I wanted to find out for myself. So what did I do the night of Christmas? I watched “Barbarian” with my dad and it was an experience I will never forget.
First off – my dad doesn’t like horror movies like me, but I think he secretly liked this one. (Don’t tell him I said that though)
So, what makes this film so good? From the very beginning, I think the pace of this movie was spot on. It kept me guessing every minute. “Barbarian” gave me accusations that turned out to be false. That guy in the beginning is the killer right? Spoiler alert – HE’S NOT?! Mind blown right?!
Every time I thought I knew where this movie was going it would take another unexpected turn, in a darker more twisted way. I will say – the cut scenes were a bit disorienting, especially when they brought new characters in. *Cough cough* Justin Long for example.
He came off as this strange character and left me wondering why do we even care about him? I still was wondering why we cared about him for the entire movie. He didn’t have a lot going for him. Other then being pompous and greedy by measuring his basement for profit use. Yes, I said that right. I believe the film added some satire for entertainment because what person would be this stupid and not freak out seeing disturbing things in a dark basement behind closed doors. Because frankly otherwise this doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
As far as the twisted turns go – the monster was freaky. She was basic but still scared me shitless. When she first appeared on screen my mouth dropped open and I had to literally shut my eyes before looking back at the screen. And the fact that there was this big mystery of who she was, and why she had an obsession with babies was interesting.
Speak of babies – don’t even get me started on the bottle and suckling scenes, those were too much. I would have rather watched probably anything else in that moment.
On the character development front, I would have loved to see a bit more from Tess. She seemed like a great person which is why I was cheering for her to live, but we never learned what she was running away from. Why did she go to this house and try and pursue a new job? I feel like the movie scratched the surface here and could have gone deeper. Justin Long was a lost cause and frankly he deserved to die in the end. That’s right I said it. Anyone oppose this statement?
And of course as a horror film fanatic I wish I saw more gore – but the arm getting ripped off towards the end was enough to please me.
To sum it up, this film was actually quiet good. I recommend it to other horror film fans but I also recommend you show it to others who don’t typically go for the genre. (Although I may be a bit biased because of my dad)
