“I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” (1998) Is Way Too Predictable

After watching “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (1997) I was on a happy high from how good it was. The plot was intriguing, and I was actually a bit scared. I mean, there were a few bumps in the road but overall, it was a great film! And there was that mystery of who the killer was.

So, I decided to keep up with the franchise, I was curious to see what the sequel entailed, and let me tell you, I got my hopes up too high.

They should have never made this film. I know that’s super blunt and honest, but the second film just felt like a way to make more money — it just didn’t feel genuine.

The bottom line — the film was way too predictable the entire way through and had spots that were too far-fetched and didn’t quite make entire sense.

From the very beginning we follow Julie, who was traumatized the most out of her friend group from what happened last summer. And they casually glaze over the ending of the first film saying, ‘oh that shower scene? It was just a dream.’ Apparently, she is having dreams where the killer is going to come and get her. These supposed dreams? They only occur in the first part of the film.

Can you say stupid?

I was trying to stay on board with the film and give it a chance, but when Julie’s roommate won a free trip the Bahamas, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. I already knew the killer was the one who gave them the free trip. I understand if someone is continuously calling into a radio station to try to win something for free, but the radio station calling you? Seems too suspicious if you ask me. But they instantly believe the call, and go to the Bahamas for the 4th of July.

Of course when they go, it’s off season and there’s a huge storm that coincidently leaves them stranded.

It all just seems too easy. The staff at the hotel get picked off one by one, and not even in creative ways, they just die by pure hook. They at least could have added more gore or made the kills more interesting. They are too boring.

And the peering around every corner in EVERY SINGLE SCENE is too much and frankly annoying. We get it, there’s a killer, but you don’t need to try and give jump scare after jump scare.

Jump scares are far more effective spaced out instead of back to back. Otherwise, it just gets boring.

And let’s not forget the fact that Jack Black is in this movie. You heard me right — Jack Black.

It couldn’t get stupider. His character is a stoner trying to sell drugs, while giving his comedic Jack Black feel to his character. For a horror movie this is unneeded, unless it’s purposely a parody.

Which I don’t think this film was.

Then, the character of Estes is weird because he’s into voodoo yet we never find out why or what the purpose is. This is just there in the film for the sake of being there (it just feels like a space filler).

Not only that, the ending of the film was extremely disjointed in how Julie and Ray escape and kill Ben Willis (and his son) once and for all. It was too fast, and just seemed far too easy. Plus how does Ben come back to life at the very end of the film after he was shot? Is he now superhuman?

That only works for masked killers…

They had a fairly good cast including Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr, Jennifer Esposito and Bill Cobbs. I just wish the plot was stronger. And quite frankly had more purpose.

If you are a fan of the original “I Know What You Did Last Summer” I highly recommend stopping there. The sequel was too predictable, stupid, and quite frankly a waste of time. I give this film a 2 out of 5 stars.

On the other hand if you want to watch a cheesy B horror movie and laugh — this film might be for you.
