Do you ever watch a movie with someone, and it’s so bad that you just need to talk about it? For hours? That’s what happened to me after I watched this film.
I finally watched the movie “Old,” and I honestly forgot it even existed. After I watched it, I figured out why. It’s terrible. And basically a forgettable movie.
That’s right — I said it— it’s bad. If you’re reading this — beware there are spoilers ahead.
When the movie started, the story was a slow burner and I didn’t really get hooked into caring about the main family and their own goals and objectives. It just seemed like they went on a family vacation, but just that for a movie premise, is kind of weak in itself. Usually there needs to be some freak occurrence to create conflict within the family dynamic so you actually root for the characters. That never really happened for me.
Sure there was a conflict — they all got stuck on a beach. But I didn’t really care if they returned home.
Let’s back up a minute, the family goes on a vacation to a resort where they then get invited to travel to a wonderful private beach with a couple other families. Because the main beach at the resort apparently isn’t enough for them? That in itself is strange, I would much rather be at a public beach then travel somewhere that’s locked up on a private reserve. I mean, you don’t know what’s in there that could kill you.
When the characters arrive at the beach they can’t leave, if they try to, they get a migraine and pass out — ending up back on the shore of the private beach. Sounds stupid — right? I would have prefered the beach somehow build up rock to block the entrance instead of this weird fainting situation. If you go too far — you faint. If you are almost out of the beach— you faint.
Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.
And the way the plot develops, the children get older but their brains don’t develop? Yet two of them become perfectly capable of figuring out how to have sex and conceive a baby right off the bat. Alrighty then…
And there’s not much mystery in the movie. I feel like the characters spoon fed information to me where I couldn’t feel clever enough to figure out all the plot holes on my own. If they did this less, I think I may have enjoyed the film a little better.
The ending also dragged on but felt abrupt at the same time.
I just wasn’t fulfilled.
This film was missing a few things for me, and that’s why it wasn’t a home-run. It had bad acting, the plot was unbelievable, and the character development was extremely weak.
Even though this movie wasn’t the best, I believe it’s still worth the watch just because of the entertainment factor. I laughed during part of it, but wait it’s not a comedy, it’s a thriller/horror film. Does that mean I watched it wrong?
What were your thoughts on “Old,” do you believe it was a cinematic masterpiece? Or did the film disappoint you?
